We are equally proud of all of our dancers who have chosen to pursue other careers after dedicating a part of their lives to Salt Creek Ballet. Some of these careers include important dance related fields such as acting, theater management, choreography and teaching. Other dancers have gone on to succeed in a myriad of professional and personal ways, with Salt Creek Ballet dancers becoming school teachers, marketing directors, business managers, lawyers and social advocates.

Featured Dancer
Julia Rhoads (88)
Former Salt Creek Ballet company member, Julia Rhoads (88) is a choreographer who has been described as “Chicago’s resident surrealist” in the Chicago Sun Times, and “adept at both provocative and humorous material” in PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art.  In 1999, she founded the dance theater company Lucky Plush Productions, and has since created over 25 original works with the company including performance installations, 2 dance films and 6 evening-length interdisciplinary productions.  Rhoads’ distinct integration of dance with theater and visual design has located Lucky Plush in a wide range of venues, from site-specific locations such as Chicago’s Millennium Park and The Great Hall at Union Station, to being the first Chicago dance company to be presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

The personality of Lucky Plush’s work is grounded in a distinct blend of contemporary dance with physical theater and visual design. The company has addressed topics such as reality TV in
Cinderbox 18, natural selection in Voyaging, dream states in Lulu Sleeps, and deconstructed fairy tales in Royal Flush.  Humor is also a defining characteristic of their repertory.

Lucky Plush’s 10
th anniversary season is primarily dedicated to a long-term project that examines ownership, materiality, copyright, and originality as they apply to the dance field in the digital age. Upcoming productions include two original dance-theater works fundamentally imbued by new technologies and approaches to dance: In the Middle, Somewhat Replicated (premiers June 2009) and Punk Yankees (premiers October 2009).  See www.luckyplush.com for more information.

In conjunction with their 10th anniversary project, Punk Yankees, Lucky Plush Productions has also launched the website StealThisDance.com, a play on Abbie Hoffman’s Steal this Book (1971). www.StealThisDance.com
